Ingress Protection(IP) Tests

Every day, we see many products used in indoor/outdoor areas. Some of these products marked for indoor use only, water-resistant, waterproof, outdoor use, hazardous areas, etc.

An indefinite marketing word like “waterproof” does not exactly give a clear definition of where and what extent the product can tolerate the moisture ingress. An IP rating intended to give a far more precise description. Such type of marketing claims achieved by conducting Ingress Protection testing (IP Code) to make sure the product works competently in a suitable environment.

IP rating ranges from IPX1 to IPX8. The level of protection from moisture is measured by the degree of protection for the products in the damp locations.

IP rating ranges from IP1X to IP6X. The level of protection from ingression of solid/dust particles is measured by the degree of protection for the products used in such areas.

Example of IP tests standards (IPXX rating or IP Code standards)

IEC / EN / AS 60529: Degrees of protection (IP Code)

Each test in 60529 standard defines specific parameters for ingress protection testing.

IP rating ranges from IPX1 to IPX8 have various parameters such as flow rate, the duration, temperature, depth and angle of the water spell out. The tests can be in the form of a drip, spray, splash or immersion.

IP rating ranges from IP1X to IP6X are determined by the ingression of the size of the solid particle.
